Space
Fitting a table around a car
A regulation table is 9ft by 5ft, and for comfortable play you want roughly 17ft by 10ft. A single garage is commonly around 12ft by 20ft, which sounds like plenty until the car, the shelving and the bins are in it.
- Buy a rollaway and fold it. The room only has to be big enough while you are playing. This is the whole reason rollaway tables exist and it is what makes a shared garage work.
- Use playback position. Half the table folded vertically gives you a rebound wall for solo practice in half the space — useful when the car is in.
- Push one long side toward a wall. Table tennis needs run-back at the ends far more than clearance at the sides, so a table close to one wall plays almost normally.
- Check the ceiling and the door track. Garage door mechanisms hang lower than the ceiling and are exactly what a high serve hits.
- Mind the floor. Concrete is rarely level, so use the table's adjustable feet — and on a sloped garage floor, orient the table across the slope rather than along it.
The bits people forget
Lighting and temperature
Garages are usually lit by one or two fittings placed for parking a car rather than for tracking a fast white ball. A couple of cheap LED battens over the playing area make a genuine difference and cost very little.
Temperature affects whether anyone actually plays more than it affects the table. An unheated garage in January is a table nobody uses — which is worth knowing before you spend, because a weatherproof table in a freezing garage is still a table that gets played six months a year.
