Short answer: if the table will live in a garage, on a patio, on a deck, or anywhere that is not a heated, dry room, buy an outdoor table. Indoor tops are particleboard-based and warp permanently when they absorb moisture, and it is not a repairable fault.
The engineering
What makes a table genuinely outdoor
Three things have to change, and a table that only changes one is not an outdoor table regardless of what the listing says.
- The top. Outdoor tables use aluminum-composite or laminated resin surfaces that do not absorb water. A coated particleboard top is an indoor top with paint on it and will still fail.
- The frame and fixings. Powder-coated or galvanized steel, and corrosion-resistant fasteners. Ordinary hardware rusts and stains the surface as it goes.
- The net posts and clamps. Usually the first components to corrode, and the most annoying to replace on a table that is otherwise fine.
Expectations
How outdoor tables play differently
Worth knowing before you buy so it is not a surprise. Composite tops are harder and smoother than wood, so the ball comes off a little faster and with slightly less grip — spin bites marginally less. Most players stop noticing within a session, and nobody playing casually notices at all.
The other difference is environmental rather than mechanical: wind. A table tennis ball weighs almost nothing, and even a light breeze changes the game. It is not a reason to avoid outdoor tables, but a sheltered position is worth far more than any specification on the table itself.

Care
Making an outdoor table last
